Cars of the 50s

Who would have believed that once the 1950s began, cars, which were more often than not powered by low-compression sixes that required tetraethyl lead for upper cylinder head lubrication, unless you used a light machine oil, and which looked more like ladder-frame bodies with fenders and quarter panels hung off them, would’ve ended the way it did?

By the end of the 1950s, there were motor vehicles such as the Chevrolet BelAir that used a small-block V-8 that was available and Cadillac was the “King of the Road,” so to speak, because it sported a big-block V-8 that cranked out more than 300 horsepower. For followers of American classic cars, these 50s cars typified the optimistic era.

The Chevrolet Corvette Appears

Big changes came when Chevrolet unveiled the ‘Vette in 1953 and clay mock-ups of later cars such as the Thunderbird were going around the design studios of Detroit. The 1955/56 Thunderbird turned out to be one of the more exciting vehicles of the fifties although it wasn’t the greatest car on earth (a Ford Custom 6 framework), it still looked fantastic and it was just the thing the marketing departments had ordered. Without a doubt, it answered the call by many customers for 2-seaters, as well as family roadsters. Chevrolet tried having single fin and later in the 1950s turned the fin on its side for the release of the 1959s, but by 1960, the fin had gone the way of the Dodo bird, it was about extinct – that is the huge fin – smaller fins continued to make their appearances right through the 60s and there were even a few small tries in the 70s.

Changes in the Late 50s

Perhaps the biggest change of course in design, and with it a fresh school of designers, was shown with the 1958 Chevrolet BelAir. The quad headlights were there as was the small-block 289, and they were the minor changes. The key changes came in the lines where the rear end became a smooth deck with taillights that weren’t just an add-on. Yes, Chevrolet did a great job with the ’56 BelAir/Nomad however the 1958 showed the shape of things to come – smooth lines, quad headlights and rounded fenders and rear quaters.

Talk about an era of change: from a slow six to a V8 powerplant and from cars where things were just hung on by committee to designs that were real, the 1950s was quite a decade.
